The Bet

This week, I managed to get myself into a situation that I now can't extract myself from. Through the medium of Twitter, I have entered into a steak eating competition at Hawksmoor.

How did this happen? @baconchop was inadvertently called a girl. He responded saying he's a man - after all, he eats big steaks. Of course, I said girls eat steak too. It snowballed from there, and now, on the 1st June, at Hawksmoor, we will be going head to head to see who can eat the most.

A battle of the sexes? Or a battle of who is most stubborn?

The rules:

1. Both contestants need to choose their meal

2. Both contestants have to have the same non-steak food and drink

3. Both contestants privately message @hawksmoorlondon their steak target (e.g. 800g bone-in rib). If they fail to eat it all they lose. If they both eat it all the person with the biggest target wins.

4. Hawksmoor will comp the winner’s steak.

5. If both contestants fail to eat their steaks Hawksmoor wins and you pay your whole bill. Hawksmoor laughs at you.

You can go and vote for who you think might win, here. If you're on Twitter, it's been hashtagged as #manvslegs. For now, wish me luck; I hope I don't puke*.

Will Beckett of Hawksmoor has pledged £1 per 100gr of steak consumed, with the total going to the winner's charity of choice, and we've had another Twitterer do the same. Feel free if you fancy it; my charity of choice is NSPCC.

For now, I am busy in training and contemplating what size to order. But for the record, I once ate so much pie I was sick in my sleep.

*Any mid-meal vomiting warrants an immediate disqualification.

What a challenge - would be worth watching! Given your history with the pie eating, I'm sure you'll perform admirably!

You have no idea how happy I am that I will be back in the UK in time for this.

Having spent the last month and a half in the US, my stomach has a capacity previously unknown to me, good luck with the training!

Seeing as Hawksmoor is right around the corner from me, I will pop in and wish you luck! Do it for the girls! Let me know if you are raising charity bets too, as I will gladly put money down!

Is there a time limit on this, Lizzie? If not I suggest you eat very verrrry slowly . . . ;-)

bodes well for you that you throw up in you sleep rather than at the table... you've totally got this!

Haha - I might stop by this after work (presuming this is in the evening) and watch the modern equivalent of Mathilde and the chocolate cake

I hope you've clarified the rules on fat and gristle... Remember John Candy in The Great Outdoors?

This bet sounds very exciting and at the same time completely terrifying. I hope you do well but I also hope you don't get sick of steak for life! That would be a disaster.
I like the tactical aspect of the bet too- not just about who can eat the most!

What kind of training are you doing then? I have a mental image of you gorging on kilograms on meat daily to prepare.

Thank you all for your support. Training involves a lot of exercise and a lot of stuffing myself silly.

I'm a bit late in posting a comment, but luck girl! You show 'em how it's done!

My boyf would have loved to take part in a comp like this if we were back in London! At Easter we had 10kg of lamb between 3 people - yeah that's a lotta meat!

Just make sure you chew & eat slow-ish!!!
